Hello and welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy your visit and may find some of its content to be entertaining or instructive. The “Ramblings and Scribblings” herein are intended to have a relaxed and wistful tone. This journal is not about myself and the latest on what I do each day, week or whatever; instead aiming to contribute to published information on wildlife I observe.

My name is Peter Law and I live just outside Oxford, England in that splendid city’s green belt. After a somewhat patchy “career” mostly in public relations and marketing, I am now semi-retired and spend a lot of time walking the countryside and observing wildlife. Since 2011 I have also travelled a fair bit in southern Europe, North Africa and once in North America.

My various interests are birds, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies (odonata), reptiles and amphibians (herpetora), wild plants especially orchids, and fungi. I remain an active member of the Oxfordshire (aka Oxon) birding community and a little further back Butterfly Conservation’s Upper Thames Branch (aka BC UTB). Likewise an occasional poster on the Oxon Birding Blog, Oxon Wildlife, the BC UTB sightings page, and Oxon Dragonflies for which I am an authorised contributor. I am currently a member of Butterfly Conservation, Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, and the Hardy Orchid Society.

For taking pictures I use an old technology Nikon D5300 SLR camera with either a Nikkor 18-300mm telephoto lens or Tamron 90mm macro lens. I by no means consider myself to be a bird or wildlife photographer, but like anyone else get occasional decent results if sufficient frames are gained in favourable conditions. My forte here is butterflies and dragonflies for which my dated equipment suits purpose. Most images published on this site are my own copyright, unless otherwise stated, but I am agreeable to them being used elsewhere on request and with acknowledgement.

Each morning my daily routine begins with updating a log of the referral totals for Rn’S posts with more than 100 views. I remain amazed by the number and variety that are consulted around the world every day. Post titles are designed to appear high up in search engine result lists. Hence no jokey puns or mock newspaper headlines, each title says exactly what the item is about. Then people interested in a subject can make an informed judgement as to whether my contribution is relevant. That is the only reason I expect anyone to visit this blog. I neither seek nor would ever imagine I have a personal following and do not wish to accumulate Likes, especially from people with no interest in wildlife themselves.

After 10 years I now mostly limit content herein to what is new and different, or at least evolved from past coverage. But for the 2025 season I am trialing Rn’S lite on Blue Sky, a platform upon which conservation organisations and fellow wildlife enthusiasts appear to be well-represented. That second string @peter-law.bsky.social will present more everyday and repetitive fayre, including horticultural interest.

Enjoy

  1. Hi Peter

I have just come across your excellent blog. I was reading about the Fungi at the church in Prestwood, and I thought I would suggest – if you don’t already know it – a very good place for fungi in October is the church at Nettlebed.

    Best wishes

    James
